Doha
O Ganesh! Glory – to you the whole world is paying,
You the delight of Gauri and Shiva – their son charming,
You – the destroyer of all problems accumulating,
You – to everybody be happiness ever conferring.

Chaupai
Glory to you – O son of Shambhu and delight of Gauri be,
Demolisher of all fears and deliverer from rebirth truly,
Shiva's henchmen leader, happiness provider to devotees,
Destroyer of ignorance and giver of knowledge universally!

The single tusk adorned on your sacred trunk dazzling fully,
Crescent-shaped triple mark on your forehead adorable be,
The celestials, men and ascetics who behold you clearly,
Be engulfed in your loveliness forever in blissful eternity.

You adore jewels garland, your eyes a full-blown lotus beauty,
On your head crown of gems, freeing devotees from anxiety,
Holding a sacred axe, a striking trident in your hands clearly,
Fragrant blossom flowers and sweet `laddus’ your delicacies.

O Kaartikeya's brother - beloved son of Shiva and Gauri,
Attired in your beautiful yellow silken dress so elegantly,
Wearing wooden sandals studded with gems beautifully,
You are the source of the blessings of the world totally.

Over you wave royal chowries accomplishment and prosperity,
Your vehicle, the mouse, adds to your splendor and glory,
And the story of your life is so strange filled with mystery,
Who can describe your magnificence, which passes all stories?

A demon disguised as Shiva tried repeatedly,
To delude Gauri  who in order to foil his folly,
Moulded you as her own son with all glory,
A divine form from the very scurf of her body.

Gauri assigned you to guard her home – your duty,
Stationed you at the very entrance for her security,
When Shiv, her husband, approached unknowingly,
He being unrecognized was not allowed any entry.

Shiv asked, "Whose son are you?" softly,
And you even replied then so pleasantly,
"I am the son of Gauri do hear undoubtedly,
And do not step towards the house" firmly.

You asked Shiv to wait for your mother's consent clearly,
Shiv avoiding to prolong talk with a child undoubtedly,
Attempted to enter – ignoring your words unmindfully,
And you then challenged him to war determinedly.

At that moment Shiv without thought plainly,
Hurled his trishul (Trident) hitting you squarely,
Severing your head from your body immediately,
Which soared into the sky and disappeared fully.

And then Shiv entered the house unheedingly,
Wherein sat the daughter of Himalaya - Gauri,
Shiv inquired from her - within but smilingly,
"Hey Sati how you give birth to your son?" openly.

The legend of your birth unfolded with her story,
And Gauri fell to the ground learning your tragedy,
"You did not do good – My Lord go sincerely,
Bring his head wherever you find it eventually."

Shiv accompanied by Vishnu searched hopefully,
Could not find your head - tried unsuccessfully,
Brought back a baby elephant’s head eventually,
Placed it on your body, gave you life and immortality.

Then you were thus named Shri Ganesh appropriately,
Blessed with knowledge, wisdom and immortality,
Shiv pronounced - you will be worshipped first eternally,
Removing all obstacles, bring joy, intellect unmistakably.

Name of Shri Ganeshji if remembered initially,
Embarking on any mission concludes successfully,
Who meditate on you get happiness, peace and security,
Without your blessing there be no success finally.

Your curse caused the universe to be effected wholly,
With earth’s reflection on moon on 4th day of Bhado truly,
When Shivji wanted to assess your intelligence justly,
He asked you to circumambulate the earth speedily.

Your brother, Kartikeya, flew on his peacock to beat you quickly,
You sat relaxed and took out a simple solution intelligently,
Writing Rama's name on the ground meditating truthfully,
You went around the name written on the ground completely.

You with utmost devotion grasped your parent’s feet reverently,
And circumambulated them seven times affectionately,
Thus achieved blessings equal to the task given essentially,
Pleased were gods - showered flowers on you delightedly.

'सुंदरदास' राम के चेरा । दुर्वासा आश्रम धरि डेरा ॥
विरच्यो श्रीगणेश चालीसा । शिव पुराण वर्णित योगीशा ॥
Sundardaas while staying in Durvasa’s hermitage holy,
Being also a dedicated and sincere Rama’s devotee,
Composed this Sri Ganesh Chalisa ever so lovingly,
Just as the Rishi composed Shiva Purana – so aptly.

The wise persons who hymn the glory of Ganesh daily,
Be blessed with intelligence and supreme bliss joyfully,
And Sri Ganesh ever blesses all his faithful devotees,
With wealth, happiness, auspicious objects and progeny.

Doha
Who repeats this hymn with earnestness has His blessings,
With all felicity, novelty and honour he be ever then growing,
`Munindra’ – His pupil with honesty ever earnestly be striving,
To sip the sublime glory of “Ganapataye’s” bliss – unrelenting.

Shri Siddhivinayak Temple : Mumbai's Most Important Temple Dedicated to Lord Ganesha

The Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Ganesha. It is located in Prabhadevi, Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was originally built by Mr. Laxman Vithu and Mrs. Deubai Patil in November 19th, 1801.

The temple has a small mandapam (hall) with the shrine for Siddhi Vinayak ("Ganesha that grants your wish"). The wooden doors to the sanctum are carved with images of the Ashtavinayak (the eight manifestations of Ganesha in Maharashtra). The inner roof of the sanctum is plated with gold, and the central statute is of Ganesha. In the periphery of the temple, there is a Hanuman temple as well.

The Siddhivinayak Mandir evolved from a small, tiny place of worship to the Grand Temple that stands today in the later half of the twentieth century. The glory to the temple was bought not only by the politicians who frequented the temple but also numerous bollywood filmstars who continuously visit the temple to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesha.

About Shree Siddhivinayak Idol

The idol of Shree Siddhivinayak is of black stone and is 2.5 feet high and 2 feet wide, with the trunk on the right. The upper right hand holds a lotus, the left an axe. The lower right hand holds a rosary and the lower left holds a 'modaka'. Around the neck is the snake like sacred thread. The idol is carved out of a single stone. The idols of Riddhi and Siddhi are on either side of Shree Siddhivinayak.

Riddhi and Siddhi are Goddesses of success, riches and prosperity. The auspicious idol of Shree Siddhivinayak with its trunk bent towards the right is unique, as the trunk is usually found curving leftwards.

How to Visit the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple

The temple is located on the corner of Kakasaheb Gadgil Marg (more commonly known as K.G. Marg) and S.K. Bole Marg, in Mumbai’s central suburb of Prabhadevi near Dadar. Visitors can enter from 6am Wednesdays to Mondays, and 4am on Tuesdays.
When attending the temple, the most important thing to keep in mind is to be clean and dress respectfully in conservative clothing that covers the legs and shoulders. To receive Lord Ganesha’s blessing, visitors should also bring an offering such as flowers and sweets to give to the God. Before entering the temple, everyone is required to undergo the necessary security checks, then remove their shoes and hand them to the clerk at the counter for safe keeping.

Inside the temple, to the right, is the three doored sanctum that houses the elaborate statue of Lord Ganesha. Those who look up will see the sanctum’s gold plated dome sparkling in the glow of an opulent chandelier. However, there’s no time to waste as the temple priests herd the crowds through the sanctum with orders of chalo, chalo (move, move). Visitors should say a prayer, hand their offerings to one of the temple priests inside the sanctum, and receive Prasad (a re-distribution of the offerings, which have been blessed by the God).

Two large silver mice statues can also be found inside the temple. It’s believed that these mice, as Lord Ganesha’s ‘vehicle’, will carry the devotees’ wishes to him. Visitors should approach one of the two mice, give it some Prasad, and while placing a hand over one of the mouse's ears, whisper their wishes into the other ear.

Who knows, the wishes just might come true!

Happy Gowri-Ganesha Chaturthi..

Gowri Habba (festival) is a Hindu festival celebrated a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. It is a significant festival in parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu. Goddess Gowri the mother of Lord Ganesha and wife of Lord Shiva is worshiped through out India for her ability to bestow upon her devotees courage & power. Hindu belief has it that Goddess Gowri is the very incarnation of Aadhi Shakthi Mahamaya. She is the Shakthi of Lord Shiva. It is believed that on Thadige, or the third day of the month of Bhaadrapada Goddess Gowri comes home like any married girl comes to her parent’s house. The next day Lord Ganesha, her son comes as if to take her back to Kailasa.

The Swarna Gowri vratha is performed on the occasion, to appease the Goddess.

About Ganesh Chaturthi

There is also a story behind the symbolic snake, rat and the singular tusk. During one of his birthdays, His mother, Parvati, cooked for him twenty-one types of delicious food and a lot of sweet porridge. Ganesha ate so much that even his big belly could not contain it. Mounting his little mouse, he embarked on his nightly rounds. His mouse suddenly stumbled upon seeing a huge snake. To adjust His belly, Ganesha put the snake on as a belt around his stomach. All of a sudden, he heard laughter emanating form the sky.

He looked up and saw the moon mocking him. Ganesha infuriated, broke off one of his tusks and hurled it at the moon. Parvati, seeing this, immediately cursed the moon that whoever looks at it on Ganesh Chaturthi will be accused of a wrong doing. The symbology behind the mouse and snake and Ganesha's big belly and its relationship to the moon on his birthday is highly philosophic. The whole cosmos is known to be the belly of Ganesha. Parvati is the primordial energy. The seven realms above, seven realms below and seven oceans, are inside the cosmic belly of Ganesha, held together by the cosmic energy (kundalini ) symbolized as a huge snake which Ganesha ties around Him. The mouse is nothing but our ego. Ganesha, using the mouse as a vehicle, exemplifies the need to control our ego. One who has controlled the ego has Ganesha consciousness or God-consciousness.

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and many other parts of India. Started by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism, the festival was revived by Lokmanya Tilak (a freedom fighter) to spread the message of freedom struggle and to defy the British who had banned public assemblies. The festival gave the Indians a feeling of unity and revived their patriotic spirit and faith. This public festival formed the background for political leaders who delivered speeches to inspire people against the Western rule. The festival is so popular that the preparations begin months in advance.

Ganesha statues installed in street corners and in homes, and elaborate arrangements are made for lighting, decoration, mirrors and the most common of flowers. Poojas (prayer services) are performed daily. The artists who make the idols of Ganesh compete with each other to make bigger and more magnificent and elegant idols. The relevantly larger ones are anything from 10 meters to 30 meters in height. These statues are then carried on decorated floats to be immersed in the sea after one, three, five, seven and ten days. Thousands of processions converge on the beaches to immerse the holy idols in the sea. This procession and immersion is accompanied by drum- beats, devotional songs and dancing.

It is still forbidden to look at the moon on that day as the moon had laughed at Ganesha when he fell from his vehicle, the rat. With the immersion of the idol amidst the chanting of "Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!" (Hail Lord Ganesh). The festival ends with pleas to Ganesha to return the next year with chants of "Ganpati bappa morya, pudcha varshi laukar ya" (Hail Lord Ganesh, return again soon next year.

History of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi or ""Vinayak Chaturthi"" is one of the major traditional festivals celebrated by the Hindu community. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). Typically the day falls sometime between August 20 and September 15. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi, and is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva (The God of Destruction in the Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer) and Parvati (Shiva’s consort). The cutest and most lovable Indian God, Ganesha or Ganpati has the head of an elephant on which rests an elegant tiara, four podgy hands joined to a sizeable belly with each hand holding its own symbolic object - a trishul or a trident in one, an ankush or goad (made from his very own broken tooth) in another, a lotus in the third and a rosary (which is sometimes replaced by modaks, his favourite sweet) in the fourth. Revered as the deity of auspiciousness and wisdom, Lord Ganesha is also famous for being a trickster and for his profound sense of humour.

It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born on a fourth day (chaturthi) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu lunar month of Magh. Since then, an association between Ganesh and chaturthi has been established. Thus the festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Ganesha on this chaturthi day is named as Ganesh Chaturthi.

There is a curiously interesting tale about the birth of Ganesha. It is believed that once while Parvati was bathing, she created a human figure from some unguent and balm, gave him life and asked him to guard the door while she bathed. After a long period of meditation on Mountain Kailash (Lord Shiva’s abode), Shiva chose that very moment to drop by to see his better half, but was abruptly stopped by the man-god Parvati had posted at the door. Outraged by the cheek of this stranger, Shiva cut off his head only to discover moments later that he had killed Parvati’s son! For fear of enraging his wife, Shiva immediately dispatched his ganas (attendants) to get him the head of the first living creature they could find. Well, the first living creature happened to be an elephant. As instructed, the head was chopped off and brought back to Shiva, who placed it on Parvati’s son’s body, bringing him back to life. This elephant-headed god was welcomed into the first family of the Hindu heavens and named Ganesha or Ganapati, which literally means the chief of the ganas, or the attendants of Shiva. Ganesha is the foremost god of the Hindu pantheon. This brave guardian of the door to Parvati’s bath is beheld today as the most auspicious God of new beginnings. He is worshipped during every festival and before people undertake a journey or embark upon a new venture. You will also see him carefully guarding entrances to temples and homes, peeping out of calendars and happily gracing marriages and other such occasions.

It is not known when and how Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated. But according to the historian Shri Rajwade, the earliest Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations can be traced back to the times of the reigns of dynasties as Satavahana, Rashtrakuta and Chalukya. Historical records reveal that Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were initiated in Maharashtra by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism. And it had continued ever since. There are also references in history to similar celebrations during Peshwa times. It is believed that Lord Ganapati was the family deity of the Peshwas. After the end of Peshwa rule, Ganesh Chaturthi remained a family affair in Maharashtra from the period of 1818 to 1892.

1857 was a landmark year for India and moreso in the context of Indian freedom. It was the year of Sepoy Mutiny, an armed rebellion against the ruling British Empire by the Indian soldiers. This was the first war that India waged to gain back her independence from her white rulers. Though unsuccesful, this battle marked the beginning of the Indian struggle for independence. Many orators, leaders and freedom fighters all over India teamed to put up a united resistance to the British domination. One of these eminent leaders was Bal Gangadhar Tilak, an Indian nationalist, social reformer and freedom fighter. Greatly esteemed by the Indian people, especially of Maharashtra, Tilak was commonly referred to as ""Lokmanya"" or ""he who is regarded by the people"". It was Tilak, who brought back the tradition of Ganesh Chaturthi and reshaped the annual Ganesh festival from private family celebrations into a grand public event.

Lokamanya saw how Lord Ganesha was worshipped by the upper stratum as well as the rank and file of India. The visionary that he was, Tilak realized the cultural importance of this deity and popularised Ganesha Chaturthi as a National Festival ""to bridge the gap between the Brahmins and the non-Brahmins and find an appropriate context in which to build a new grassroots unity between them"" in his nationalistic strivings against the British in Maharashtra. He knew that India couldn't fight her rulers until she solved the differences within her own. Hence, to unite all social classes Tilak chose Ganesha as a rallying point for Indian protest against British rule because of his wide appeal as ""the god for Everyman"".

It was around 1893, during the nascent stages of Indian nationalism, that Tilak began to organize the Ganesh Utsav as a social and religious function. He was the first to put in large public images of Ganesha in pavilions and establish the tradition of their immersion on the tenth day. The festival facilitated community participation and involvement in the form of learned discourses, dance dramas, poetry recital, musical concerts, debates, etc. It served as a meeting place for common people of all castes and communities, at a time when all social and political gatherings were forbidden by the British Empire for fear of conspiracies to be hatched against them. An important festival during the Peshwa era, Ganesha Chaturthi acquired at this time a more organized form all over India largely due to Lokmanya's efforts.

Since then, Ganesh Chaturthi has been celebrated throughout Maharashtra as also in other states with great community enthusiasm and participation. With the independence of India in 1947, it was proclaimed to be a national festival.

Today, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in the states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and many other parts of India. The festival is so popular that the preparations begin months in advance. Days before the actual worship, homes are cleaned and marquees erected at street corners to house the idols of the Lord. Elaborate arrangements are made for lighting, decoration, mirrors and flowers. The artisans who make the idols of Ganesh vie with each other to make bigger and better sculptures. The sizes of the relatively larger ones range anywhere from 10 meters to 30 meters in height. These are installed in marquees and in homes prior to the Puja (worship). During the festival days, the Lord is worshipped with great devotion and prayer services are performed daily. The duration of the Lord's stay varies from place to place; once the worship is complete, the statues are carried on decorated floats to be immersed in the sea after one, three, five, seven and ten days. Thousands of processions converge on the beaches to immerse the holy idols in the sea. This procession and immersion is accompanied with dancing and the sound of exciting drum-beats, devotional songs and exploding firecrackers. As the idol is immersed amidst loud chants of ""Ganesh Maharaj Ki Jai!"" (Hail Lord Ganesh), the festival comes to an end with pleas to the Lord to return the next year with chants of ""Ganpati bappa morya, pudcha varshi laukar ya"" (Hail Lord Ganesh, return again soon next year). Tourists from all over the world come to witness this wonderful event in the sun kissed beaches of Goa and Mumbai.

While celebrated all over India, Ganesh Chaturthi festivities are most elaborate in states like Maharashtra, Goa (It is the biggest festival for Konkani people all over the world), Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and other areas which were former states of the Maratha Empire. Outside India, it is celebrated in Nepal by the Newars.

In the 21st century, with the world turning fast into a global village, Ganesh Chaturthi is now celebrated all over the world, wherever there is a presence of a Hindu community.
